Spruce Budworm are devastating our beloved trees. Fortunately, there is a long-standing, proven treatment utilizing a natural soil bacteria [Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)]. For more than 30 years, Btk (kurstaki variety) has been registered for use in Canada and the USA to mitigate spruce budworm infestation. Btk has been proven safe for all flora and fauna and has no known toxic effects. Townsite, working in partnership with an aerial applicator and a Forestry & Environmental Specialist, has obtained the requisite permit for an aerial application from Transport Canada as well as an endorsement from Health Canada and Alberta Environment and Parks, to conduct and aerial spray projected to be sometime in May or June (the exact dates of spray will be weather dependent and determined by an entomologist depending on the larvae stage). It is anticipated that the spray will occur over two days (with a possible 7-10 day gap in between) from 0500-0830hrs in the morning. Closer to the date, a communication campaign will be delivered so all residents are aware and can plan accordingly. Please click on the documents/links below for further information on Btk.
