Using Water Safely at Home During a Boil Water Advisory

What is a boil water advisory?

A boil water advisory is issued when harmful germs (e.g., E.coli bacteria, Giardia parasite) may be in a drinking water supply. Drinking water contaminated with these germs can make people and animals very sick. Boiling will kill the germs and make the water safe to drink after cooling.

When a boil water advisory has been issued, how should the water be used?

When a boil water advisory has been issued,

Sometimes you can use bottled water, but it depends on when and how the water was bottled. Bottling plants and/or water dispensers that use local water must treat the water to remove harmful germs. Check with the Environmental Public Health Office (phone numbers below) about bottled water brands or water dispensers that have been treated so the water is safe. You can also use water bottled from another public water supply not affected by the advisory.

Can tap water be used for showering or bathing?

Healthy individuals may take showers or baths with untreated tap water, if they are careful not to swallow any tap water. Younger children (elementary school age) should not use the water for showering unless properly instructed and supervised. Infants, toddlers and young children are more likely to drink bath water, so they should be given a sponge bath instead of bathing them in a tub. People with open wounds, cuts, blisters or recent surgical wounds should not use the water for showering, unless measures are in place to prevent exposure to wound areas (such as covering the wound with a waterproof covering).

A domestic dishwasher can be used if it works well and has a hot temperature setting or sanitizer cycle. Let the dishes dry completely, preferably using a heated dry cycle on the dishwasher. If the dishwasher does not have a hot temperature setting, it is recommended that dishes be sanitized using method outlined in the hand dishwashing question above.

On Wednesday October 30th, a 3rd party line (Axia) that services Redwood Meadows for Eastlink was broken. The break occurred by Three Hills Alberta earlier in October and the repair that was completed at the time was ineffective and broke a second time. The line has been repaired and an electronic board was replaced by Eastlink, at the Eastlink shed located in Redwood Meadows. The system was up and running on Thursday October 31st.

Please be aware there has been cougars spotted in Redwood over the last couple of weeks in several locations.

Cougars and other wildlife are always on the move looking for prey, and there has been a recent deer kill in town.

Fish & Wildlife has been made aware of the situation.

We will continue to see increased activity in town as the deer become more and more domesticated.

            Do NOT feed the deer!

Do NOT feed any wildlife(no matter how cute they are)

Keep attractants like fruit bearing bushes or trees off your property.

As always, please be aware of your surroundings. With fawning season upon us, we will see an increase in predator activity.

           PLEASE ATTEND!

The 2024 wildfire season is upon us. To date we have managed to avoid any major fires in the area but recognize we are living within mature coniferous trees. Our topography is relatively flat and the winds predominantly blow from the west and southwest direction. We are at the mercy of limited and difficult access to some structures and a limited water supply.

As citizens it is our responsibility to ensure we protect our properties to the fullest extent to prevent a loss to our homes and community. We are a structured community of primarily cedar siding, combustible wood shake and older asphalt-shingled roofing materials. Surrounded by trees and storage structures in the backyards that are heavily occupied with peripheral unused items and overgrown vegetation surrounding those structures. This creates a fire hazard to not only you, your neighbours and eventually everyone in the community.

This is a preliminary notification regarding the prospects of a very hot, dry summer with associated extreme fire potentials throughout the province. Further information will be published to all residents with the May 8th presentation.

This is considered vital for resident attendance.

Crews worked on Sleigh Drive until 10pm trying to clear the excavation of water, in order to complete the repairs. Unfortunately the level and volume of ground water has forced the contractor to revise their plan to complete the water line repairs.

Crews are back this morning to install a culvert to create a sump pit in order to drain the water away from the broken line so that the repairs can be completed. Water will be shut off to the Sleigh Drive Residents again today at approximately 10am, for approximately 2 hours.

We have scheduled the repairs to the water main and 2 curb stops to begin on Monday October 2, 2023. The location of the dig will be by 21 Sleigh Drive. The contractor, LT Earth Services, has scheduled Alberta 1 Call for Thursday Sept. 28

then we will initiate an exploratory excavation on October 2

to expose the main and to isolate the leak. Once the exploratory dig is completed the hole will be backfilled so that the necessary parts to complete the repair can be picked up in Calgary. The excavator will then excavate to expose the damaged line, once exposed we will have to shut down the water to Sleigh Drive in order to make the repairs. Once the repairs are completed, the water will be turned on. How long your water will be shut off cannot be determined at this time so we suggesting that the affected residents store potable water for drinking and to fill your bath tub with water so water can be bucketed in order to use your toilets. We are expecting the water to be shut off for no more than 8 hours. If necessary the Townsite will bring in a portable cistern for additional potable water. We are also replacing two curb stops - one at 18 Sleigh Drive – which is in the driveway and the other at 21 Sleigh Drive – which is in the landscaped area. 18 Sleigh Drive will mean cutting out a portion of the driveway so vehicle access will be impacted. Once the repairs and backfilling have been completed we will then pave the impacted areas – including the driveway at 18 Sleigh Drive. Landscaping will be repaired in the spring of 2024, if we can’t get sod for this year.

There is a possibility that the paving may have to be deferred until the spring as all paving companies and crews are flat out busy trying to complete contract before the asphalt plants close. If the paving cannot be completed then we will backfill up to the level of the adjacent paving elevations making the roadway and driveway safe and usable.

Vehicle traffic will have to access their homes from either the north or south entrances to Sleigh Drive as the roadway will be “cut in half” during the work.

We apologize for the inconvenience but we are hoping that with this repair we will see significant reduction in our potable water loss.

Please make sure to keep pets indoors or on leash and to make sure any children are playing indoors or in back yards as we will have significant large truck traffic on Sleigh Drive.

Any questions please do not hesitate to contact myself at the Administration building.

Water Update- Thursday September 21, 2023. Our technicians have identified the issue at the water plant and have been able to bring the raw water pump back online.

As always, please do your best to not waste water as this puts unnecessary strain on the plant.
