As fall approaches bears are preparing for hibernation. Their caloric daily intake rises from 5000 to over 20000 per day. Bears look to gain 1-1 1/2 times their weight in the fall. This is a primary reason why they are scavenging for food in our community. They become increasingly volatile in the fall as their ravenous needs overtake their fear of people. This is why we as residents need to be increasingly diligent to not allowing them to be conditioned into thinking our community is a food source.
There have numerous sightings of black bears in our community over the past week. The townsite has engaged in a more proactive approach to dealing with residents not abiding by our waste disposal bylaws.
